Objective: To determine the frequency of thrombocytopenia in patients with COVID-19.
Study Design: Cross sectional study.
Place and Duration of Study: Combined Military Hospital, Quetta Pakistan, from Apr 2021 to Mar 2022.
Methodology: A total of 225 patients with COVID-19 were selected using non-probability, consecutive sampling. After ethical approval, informed consent platelet count was studied in 2 weeks of hospital admission fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results: Two hundred and twenty-five patients, with age ranging from 30 to 60 years and mean 44.89±5.42 years were included in this study, in which 95 patients were COVID-19 survivors and 130 were non-survivors. Blood samples of all patients was collected, and platelet count was studied and categorized into [0-50], [50-100], [100-150], and 150 or more by using unit (×109/L). 2321 tests of platelet count were done, that shows 50×109/L was the lower limit of normal range of platelets. Overall mortality rate per 1000 is 77 out of which was survival rate is 93.4% and death rate (6.6%), moreover mortality rate in patient with platelet [0-50]is (38.80%), [50-100] (25.70%), [100-150] (23.60%), and >150 group (11.70%) respectively.
Conclusion: Thrombocytopenia was common in patients with corona virus and platelet count was relatively lower in severe COVID-19 infection and analyzing the gradual decrease in platelet counts may be useful in the prognosis of patients with COVID-19.
